NYT A Moment in Time
The idea behind this project came from Jim Estrin, Photo Editor, who wondered, "what if we asked everyone to snap a photo at the same exact time on a given date, around the world?"
The result was an overwhelming response, much bigger than we had anticipated, straining our photo moderators and systems. However, we learned a lot from the experience, and in the end produced an interactive allowing our audience to see moments in time around the world.
I developed the platform that allowed the newsroom to create custom forms for UGC, a multimedia uploading service, the moderation system for reviewing submissions and a series of APIs for working with the content. The resulting interactive, which navigated through all the "moments" via a three-dimensional globe, was a collaboration between Zach Wise and myself.
